Quincy Takes Rockhurst to Fifth Set

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's volleyball team was close to a stunning upset over Rockhurst University Friday night (Oct. 3) in Pepsi Arena.  QU took RU to a fifth set winning the first and third set of the night.  Senior Samantha Haegele led Quincy with 18 kills and she added 18 digs and four blocks.  QU had 17 team blocks on the night and held Rockhurst to a .159 hitting percentage.  There were 14 ties and five lead changes in the match.

Quincy (2-13, 0-8 GLVC) took a 12-5 lead in the first set.  Rockhurst (12-1, 7-1 GLVC) battled all the way back to tie the match at 19-19.  QU responded with a kill by Bekah Raebel and a block by Carly Schmitt and Emily Lindemulder.  After an RU point, the Hawks took the next four points to win the first set 25-20.  

Rockhurst hit .238 in the second set and won 25-18 to tie the match 1-1.

Rockhurst took a 10-5 lead in the third set, but Quincy answered with four and three-point runs to take a 12-11 lead.  RU took the next four points to retake the lead 15-12.  Quincy scored five of the next six points to take a 17-16 lead and force an RU timeout.  Rockhurst tied the match at 19-19 following the timeout.  QU scored three straight points with two kills by Samatha Haegele and one kill by Jessica Licurgo to force another RU timeout.  Following the timeout, QU took three of the next four points to win the third set 25-20 and take a 2-1 match lead.

Rockhurst regrouped in the fourth set and recorded 17 kills and a .293 hitting percentage.  They tied the match 2-2 after a 25-13 fourth set win.

Rockhurst led the decisive fifth set 11-5.  QU went on a four-point run with two kills by Carly Schmitt to pull within 11-9.  Rockhurst scored the next two points.  Carly Schmitt answered with a kill.  After a Rockhurst attacking error, Emily Lindemulder and Bekah Raebel stuffed RU at the net for a block assist.  After a Rockhurst timeout, Emily Lindemulder slammed home a kill to tie the match at 13-13.  Rockhurst outlasted the QU attack and took the next two points to win the set, 15-13, and the match, 3-2.

Samantha Haegele led Quincy with 18 kills.  Fellow senior Carly Schmitt added 12 kills and five blocks.  Emily Lindemulder posted eight kills and recorded 10 blocks in the match.  Rachel Shores led Quincy with 33 digs at libero.  Jessica Licurgo had two aces and seven blocks. 

QU hit .113 in the match with 93 digs.  Rockhurst posted 103 digs and 64 kills on the night.  

Quincy will host William Jewell College in their next home match on Saturday (Oct. 4) in Pepsi Arena.  The match is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m. and is Breast Cancer Awareness Night sponsored by General Mills.  QU will be running fundraisers throughout the match to raise money for the Blessing Cancer Research Center.
