Roberts Nets Winner in Overtime Thriller at Lewis

QUINCY, Ill. – The 10th-ranked Quincy University men's soccer team came out on the right side of a wild game as senior forward Jordan Roberts (Durham, England/Gilesgate) netted the game-winner in overtime to beat Lewis, 2-1, in Romeoville, Ill. on Friday (Oct. 17) night.

The game went end-to-end as both sides had chances to break the 1-1 tie in the second half and overtimes, but it was the Hawks (13-0-1, 10-0-1 GLVC) who extended their unbeaten streak to 14 games.

Quincy opened the scoring in the sixth minute on its first shot of the game. Sophomore midfielder Xhovani Dokaj (St. Louis, Mo./CBC) received the ball at the top of the box from senior midfielder Steve McAnany (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney), turned and fired a bender inside the far post for his 11th goal of the season. McAnany was credited with his fourth assist, while redshirt-freshman defender Michael Timmermann (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell) was credited with his second.

Five minutes later, the Hawks benefited from some good fortune as George Thompson's shot banged off the post – the first of three times the Flyers (7-4-2, 6-3-2 GLVC) would hit the goal-frame.

Roberts hit the post in the 20th minute and had another shot saved three minutes later to keep the score at 1-0.

The Flyers would respond at the other end in the 28th minute as Devon Amoo-Mensah scored on a diving header from a cross by Isaac Sutton. That was the first goal of the year for Amoo-Mensah.

Senior goalkeeper Drew Duncan (Florissant, Mo./CBC) kept the Flyers out of the net with two saves in the final four minutes of the first half.

Lewis out-shot the Hawks, 8-5, in the first 45 minutes as the game went back-and-forth.

The Flyers hit the post again in the 63rd minute and then clanged the crossbar with a shot with less than a minute to play in regulation. Duncan also made three saves in the second half, including a diving stop that kept the game tied.

Meanwhile, the Hawks could not find the finishing touch in the second half, launching 10 shots at Omar Ramirez, who made three saves in the half.

In the 98th minute, Roberts finally came free in scoring position as sophomore midfielder Taylor Reis (Quincy, Ill./QND) found the senior with a through-ball and Roberts ripped a shot past Ramirez for the game-winner. It was his GLVC-leading 14th goal of the season and Reis' league-best eighth assist.

Both teams finished with 17 shots and eight shots on goal. The Hawks held a 5-2 edge on corner kicks. Duncan made seven saves, while his counterpart, Ramirez, finished with six.

The Hawks will be back in action on Sunday (Oct. 19) when they travel to UW-Parkside for a  noon kickoff with the Rangers.
