QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team came from behind again to defeat the Missouri S&T Miners 11-9 Friday (May 12).
Play by Play:
The Hawks struck first in the top of the second inning. JC DeMuri was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame.
Michael Nielsen doubled over the head of the left fielder to score DeMuri and give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. The Hawks scored another run on a sac fly by TJ Tamaccio and the Hawks led 2-0.
Missouri S&T plated five runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-2 lead over the Hawks.
QU cut into the lead by scoring a run in both the third and the fourth innings to cut the lead to 5-4.
In the top of the fifth, Chandler Purcell got the rally started with a single to right field with one out.
Matt Hilmes singled through the right side of the infield to put runners on first and third.
Jake Viaene tied the game at 5-5 with a sacrifice fly.
With two outs, TJ Tamaccio singled to extend the inning and Brynn Martinez walked to load the bases for Cody Birdsong.
Birdsong delivered with a two-run single to give the Hawks a 7-5 lead over the Miners.
The Hawks added a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to take a 9-5 lead over Missouri S&T.
The Miners scored three runs after a two-out error by the Hawks and cut the QU lead to 9-8 after six innings of play.
The Miners loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh on three consecutive hit by pitches with one out in the frame.
Missouri S&T tied the game on a wild pitch with two outs as the ball scooted away from catcher Jake Viaene.
JC DeMuri gave the Hawks the lead right back with a monster solo home run in the top of the 8th.
The Hawks worked around a one-out walk as the baserunner was erased with a strikeout and a caught stealing in the bottom of the eighth.
QU added an insurance run in the top of the ninth as Troy Wehde brought home Brynn Martinez with a sac fly to give the Hawks an 11-9 lead.
Alex Pribyl was terrific out of the bullpen, striking out seven Miners in 2 1/3 innings of work.
In the bottom of the ninth, Pribyl retired the first two batters and Cole Crawford retired the final Miners' batter on a strikeout as the Hawks held on for an 11-9 win.
