Hawks Advance to GLVC Championship

QUINCY, Ill. - 110 minutes of action was not enough to find a winner in the GLVC semifinal matchup between the Quincy Hawks and the Bellarmine Knights.

The Hawks and the Knights would be forced to settle the game in penalty kicks.

QU successfully converted all five penalty kicks to advance to Sunday's championship game.

A low scoring affair was no surprise as QU and Bellarmine combined to allow just 16 goals all season

It was a defensive struggle from the opening kick as neither team could find a clean look at goal.

The best opportunity to score came in the 33rd minute of action.  Samantha Ferry of Bellarmine drove a shot from just outside the 18-yard box and drilled the right post and the ball bounced harmlessly away.

Neither team could muster another scoring opportunity in the first half and went into the locker room scoreless.

Bellarmine had another prime chance to break the scoreless tie in the 55th minute of play.

The Knights broke behind the Hawk defense and Audrey Van Der Elst took a shot that got by Megan Swanson (St. Charles, MO./ St. Dominic).  Katie Heiligenstein (Wentzville, MO./ St. Dominic) had shifted behind Swanson and cleared the ball off the goal line at the last second.

QU registered several shots but couldn't break the tough Knight defense.

With eight minutes remaining in the second half, Bailey Greubel set up for corner kick looking to put the Hawks ahead.

Greubel's corner cleared the Knights defense and found a wide open Heiligenstein.

Heiligenstein had just a little too much power behind her shot and sent the ball over the crossbar.

The Hawks and Knights would end regulation scoreless.

In the first overtime period, only one shot by Cassidy Foley (Quincy, IL / Quincy Notre Dame) was recorded and the teams would go to a second overtime.

The Hawks had two shots saved in the second overtime period and the teams would settle the game in penalty kicks.

Mackenzie Rief (Wentzville, MO / St. Dominic) took the Hawks first penalty kick and scored to put the Hawks up 1-0.

The Knights answered and tied the score at 1-1.

Cassidy Foley just snuck her shot inside the post and put the Hawks up 2-1.  Bellarmine kept pace and scored again to keep the scored tied.

Senior Maddy Kuhlenberg (St. Louis, MO / Incarnate Word) put the Hawks up 3-2 as she buried her attempt.

The Knights missed their third penalty attempt and trailed 3-2.

Heiligenstein scored her PK attempt to give the Hawks a comfortable 4-2 lead.

Bellarmine extended the PKs when Annabel Moore snuck the ball just past the outstretched hands of Megan Swanson.

Greubel advanced the Hawks to the GLVC championship game by converting her penalty kick attempt.

QU will face the winner of the McKendree/Maryville game being played Friday afternoon (Nov. 3).

This is the fifth time under Dave Musso the Hawks have advanced to the GLVC championship game (2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2017).
