Hawks Complete Rout With Second Half Romp

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University football team started slowly on Saturday (Sept. 10), but finished with a flurry, scoring 50 points in the second half on its way to a 64-7 rout of Mayville State at QU Stadium. The game was Quincy's home opener.

The Hawks are now 2-0 to start the season for the first time since 1998. QU heads into Great Lakes Valley Conference play next Saturday (Sept. 17) at Lincoln.

The Hawks, who looked lackluster at times during the first half, were simply dominant in the final 30 minutes. The defense held Mayville State to minus-7 yards of offense in the second half. The Comets (1-1) had just one first down after halftime.

The teams were scoreless after the first quarter. The Hawks had a chance to score on their first possession of the game, but Mayville State fell on a mishandled handoff inside its own 5-yard line and took over possession.

The Hawks broke through on the second play of the second quarter as redshirt-freshman tailback Jaylan James (St. Louis, Mo./Miller Career Academy) pounded it in from three yards out to give QU a 7-0 lead. That capped a 10-play, 66-yard drive.

Quincy's defense held until the Comets also converted a 10-play, 66-yard drive later in the quarter that tied the game at 7-7.

Just before halftime, the Hawks cashed in again as redshirt-sophomore quarterback Robbie Kelley (Rochester, Ill.) scored on a one-yard rollout to double up the Comets, 14-7, at the intermission.

The Hawks took control in the second half, scoring six touchdowns on nine offensive possessions.

Kelley connected with senior wide receiver Eric Poindexter (Newport News, Va./Warwick/Monroe College) on a 21-yard touchdown pass and then hit redshirt-junior tight end Owen Schoenenberger (Evansville, Wis.) on a 20-yard strike later in the third quarter.

Poindexter fully extended for a 38-yard catch to kickstart the Hawks' next quick scoring drive that was capped by James' five-yard dive.

In the fourth quarter, the Hawks let their running game and special teams finish the rout. James' third touchdown gave the Hawks a 43-7 lead with 9:19 to play.

The Comets then could not handle a punt snap and sophomore safety Theo Hopkins (Chicago, Ill./Leo) grabbed the loose ball in the end zone for a touchdown.

After recovering a short kickoff down the right sideline, the Hawks tacked on another score, this one coming in odd fashion. Freshman running back Briar Hancock (Paris, Mo.) fumbled the ball on a 3rd-and-3 play and the ball fell among a group of players. Quincy center Ray Gieseo (Boca Raton, Fla.) came away with the football and joyfully high-stepped his way into the end zone for his first career touchdown.

QU's final score came on another short field after an MSU punt and Hancock found paydirt from six yards out.

The Hawks out-gained the Comets, 451-111, for the game and held the visitors to just 1.8 yards per play. MSU went 9-for-28 through the air for just 65 yards.

The QU offense continued its balanced effort, rushing for 204 yards and throwing for 247. Kelley was 18-for-25 with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Schoenenberger was his favorite target, catching nine passes for 124 yards and a touchdown.

Poindexter hauled in four passes for 80 yards and a score. He also totaled 101 return yards and finished with 181 all-purpose yardage.

James led the rushing assault with 107 yards on 32 carries and three touchdowns. Freshman backup quarterback Andrew Rund (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Priory) saw action in the fourth quarter and rushed four times for 31 yards.

Redshirt-sophomore linebacker T.J. Daniels (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) led the Hawks with six tackles, including one for loss and a safety. Sophomore linebacker Cody Leonard (Carrollton, Ill.) had five tackles, with 2.5 for loss and a sack.

The Hawks open their GLVC schedule next Saturday (Sept. 17) at 2 p.m. at Lincoln.
