Defense Swarms as Hawks Go To 3-0 in Blowout

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University football team turned in a dominating road performance on Saturday (Sept. 17) afternoon at Lincoln, defeating the Blue Tigers, 40-14, to improve to 3-0 for the first time since 1993. The game served as the GLVC opener for both teams.

The QU defense kept the Blue Tigers (0-3, 0-1 GLVC) off the board through the first three quarters and held the hosts to minus-14 yards and no first downs in the first half as the Hawks built a 27-0 halftime lead.

The Hawks got on the board on their opening drive as redshirt-sophomore quarterback Robbie Kelley (Rochester, Ill.) connected with junior wideout Brendan Saak (Belleville, Ill./Belleville East) on a 16-yard touchdown pass to cap an 11-play, 75-yard drive that took up six minutes.

The Hawks rushed for 47 yards on nine carries on the opening drive. Redshirt-freshman Jaylan James (St. Louis, Mo./Miller Career Academy) continued his career-starting string of 100-yard games, rushing for 133 yards on 24 carries.

On the their next possession, the Hawks drove 70 yards on 11 plays and chewed up five minutes, 25 seconds. Kelley found redshirt-junior tight end Owen Schoenenberger (Evansville, Wis.) on a seven-yard touchdown pass to give the Hawks a 14-0 lead.

Sophomore safety Shane Barrett (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East) made it 21-0 before the end of the first quarter as he stepped in front of an Andrew McIntyre pass and returned it 24 yards for a pick-six. It was one of three interceptions for the Hawks on Saturday.

Redshirt-junior cornerback Adehkeem Brown (St. Louis, Mo./Ladue) picked off a pass in the end zone in the second quarter after a muffed punt by the Hawks gave the Blue Tigers prime field position. Redshirt-freshman safety Zac Lonergan (Jacksonville, Ill.) also had an interception in the fourth quarter.

Freshman kicker Ben Nord (Quincy, Ill./Quincy Notre Dame) handled all the scoring in the second quarter, drilling a 35-yard field goal with 5:32 left in the first half.

Nord then broke a 22-year-old school record by drilling a 50-yard field goal four seconds before halftime. The previous school record was a 48-yard field goal by Heath Tagtmeyer in 1994.

The Blue Tigers still did not have a first down in the third quarter as the defense continued its dominance while the offense possessed the ball at a near 2-to-1 ratio. Lincoln was 4-for-12 on third downs in the game.

With five minutes left in the third quarter, Kelley rushed for a 34-yard touchdown scamper – his third rushing touchdown of the season – to give Quincy a 33-0 lead.

Kelley's 15-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Eric Poindexter (Newport News, Va./Warwick/Monroe College) with 17 seconds left in the third stretched the lead to 40-0.

The Blue Tigers finally got their offense going in the fourth quarter with backup Dennis Vinson under center. Lincoln tacked on a pair of touchdowns late to cut the final margin to 26.

Overall, the Hawks burned up 303 yards on the ground, averaging 5.8 yards on 52 rushes. Kelley had 70 yards and seven carries and was not sacked for the second time in three games. The QU offensive line has allowed just one sack this season. Freshman backup quarterback Andrew Rund (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Priory) rushed for 44 yards on eight carries as he took over in the fourth quarter.

The Hawks out-gained the Blue Tigers, 472-184, for the game and held the hosts to minus-38 yards rushing.

Kelley was 18-for-29 for 162 yards and three touchdowns with no turnovers. James was the Hawks' leading receiver with four catches for 40 yards while Schoenenberger also caught four passes for 30 yards and a touchdown.

Sophomore linebacker Cody Leonard (Carrollton, Ill.) led the defense with eight tackles, including 3.5 for loss and a sack. Leonard entered the game ranked fifth in Division II in tackles for loss.

Redshirt-junior linebacker Nate Rueckemann (McHenry, Ill.), redshirt-senior defensive end Tanner Day (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West) and redshirt-senior defensive end Brad Eckols (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor Community) also each registered a sack in the game.

The Hawks return to QU Stadium next Saturday (Sept. 24) for Homecoming against Southwest Baptist. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
