Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Brendan Bittner

Hawks Advance To Title Game on Penalties

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's soccer team advanced to the GLVC Tournament championship game by defeating Indianapolis on penalty kicks, 4-1, in Friday (Nov. 6) night's semifinal in Kansas City, Mo. The game was a rematch of last season's GLVC championship game, which Indianapolis won, 3-1, at Legends Stadium.

The No. 3-seed Hawks (12-5-2) and No. 2-seed Greyhounds (12-4-3) played to a scoreless tie through 110 minutes, forcing the penalties to decide the advancing team. The game will go as a draw in both teams' records, which help determine their bid potential and seeding in the NCAA Tournament.

Quincy will now play for the GLVC championship on Sunday (Nov. 8) at 1 p.m. against the winner of the second semifinal between Rockhurst and Missouri S&T.

On Friday, the QU defense and sophomore goalkeeper Nate Griffin (St. Louis, Mo./CBC) were outstanding, absorbing pressure from the 'Hounds throughout the contest.

Indianapolis out-shot the Hawks, 17-7, in the game and forced Griffin into four saves. QU did not place a shot on goal, but the defense carried the night for Quincy. The Hawks now have four shutouts on the season.

Perhaps the best defensive play of the game came in the 109th minute as the 'Hounds pressed for a goal. Zak Mitiche got off a volley from inside the penalty area after a scramble and sophomore center back Conner Sendobry (St. Louis, Mo./CBC/UW-Green Bay) flicked it over the crossbar with his head to save a sure game-winning goal.

The Hawks were able to clear the ensuing corner kick and send the game into penalties. That is where Griffin shined.

After senior Ben Oliver (Dromore, N. Ireland/Banbridge) converted on the first penalty, Griffin made a diving save to keep out Josh Ling. On the next round, sophomore Artan Emini (Yorkville, Ill.) scored and Griffin made a diving stop to the opposite side to deny Mitiche and give QU a 2-0 edge through two kicks.

Redshirt-freshman Kyle Fraser (Helston, U.K./Helston Community Prep) knocked his penalty into the net before UIndy's Jacob Meyer also converted to keep the 'Hounds alive.

Next, sophomore Chris McArthur (St. Louis, Mo./CBC) drove his penalty home to clinch the Hawks' berth in the title game.

Quincy has one GLVC Tournament championship in its history, winning the title in 2011 in double overtime over Drury. That championship came at the same site as Sunday's championship game, which will kick off at 1 p.m. on Sunday in Kansas City, Mo.
