Quincy Just Misses GLVC Championship Crown

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's soccer team ended a string of five straight results on Sunday (Nov. 8) at the hand of Rockhurst University in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship at Kansas City, Mo. The host school won the GLVC Championship with a goal in the 71st minute. Nate Griffin finished the game with six saves.

Rockhurst (16-1-2) played with a quick pace in the first half. RU put four shots on net before half that Nate Griffin stopped.

Kyle Fraser hit the crossbar in the 41st minute, but QU (12-6-2) went to half tied 0-0.

Quincy went on the attack in the beginning of the second half. Artan Emini put a shot on net that was saved after a Kyle Fraser corner kick.

A Rockhurst foul in the box in the 57th minute put Emini over the ball for a penalty kick and a chance to take the lead. Emini missed high over the crossbar and the game remained scoreless.

RU countered on a set piece in the 59th minute, but put a shot wide left on an open net.

Rockhurst's Brian O'Neal was over the ball just outside of the box in the 71st minute. He made a move from the left of the box toward the center and bent a shot around a flurry of players and inside the far post to break the tie.

Rockhurst had another chance in the 76th minute. Nate Griffin left the box to play a cross, but the ball bounced back toward the front of the net. Griffin raced back to grab a header on a line to the back of the net to keep hope alive.

QU was unable to put a shot on net the rest of the way.

Rockhurst's Logan Feldmann earned the shutout win with three saves.

Quincy awaits the NCAA Division II Selection Show on Monday (Nov. 9) at 5 pm on NCAA.com.
