Hawks Advance in GLVC Tournament With 3-1 Win

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's soccer team took command in the second half, led offensively by a couple freshmen, defeating Bellarmine, 3-1, in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament quarterfinal on Sunday (Nov. 1) afternoon at Legends Stadium.

The Hawks (12-5-1) advanced to the GLVC Tournament semifinal for the sixth consecutive year, the longest such streak in the conference. The No. 3-seed Quincy will square off with No. 2-seed Indianapolis on Friday in Kansas City, Mo. Rockhurst, the championship host and top seed, will play Missouri S&T in the other semifinal.

The Hawks and Knights (10-9) spent most of the first half feeling each other out with neither team coming up with a great scoring threat.

The most dangerous opportunity for either team came when QU junior Taylor Reis (Quincy, Ill./QND) got behind the back line on a nice through-ball from sophomore Jordan Stephens (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell) in the 14th minute. Reis was denied by BU goalkeeper Tommy Hebert, who made a sliding stop off his line.

The Hawks out-shot the Knights, 5-2, in the first half, but the teams went into the break scoreless.

Quincy broke through in the 54th minute when freshman Eddie Plesha (Normal, Ill./Normal Community) slid onto the end of a cross from Stephens and touched it past Hebert. Stephens and junior Pete Condol (Mount Carmel, Ill.) were each credited with assists on the goal.

Just seven minutes later, redshirt-freshman Kyle Fraser (Helston, U.K./Helston Community Prep) was sent free by Condol's pass through the midfield that deflected off a Bellarmine defender. Fraser was able to coolly knock the ball past Hebert for his second goal of the season. Condol now has three assists.

The Hawks put the game out of reach in the 64th minute as Plesha knifed his way through the Bellarmine defense on a weaving 30-yard run, only stopping to deliver a perfect strike from 14 yards to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead. It was his third goal of the season.

QU saw the game out from there, the only disappointment being a late goal by Ryan Fagan less than two minutes from full time.

Quincy out-shot the Knights, 8-4, and won the advantage in corner kicks, 4-2.

The Hawks will now face a UIndy team they defeated, 3-2 in overtime, in Indianapolis on Sept. 27. It will be a rematch of last year's GLVC Tournament championship game which saw the Greyhounds hand Quincy its first loss of the season, 3-1, at Legends Stadium.
