Lady Hawks Head To GLVC Final Four With PK Win

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's soccer team entered the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament as the No. 6 seed – its lowest placement since 2003 – but the Lady Hawks came from behind to advance to the semifinals by defeating Rockhurst in penalty kicks, 5-4, in Kansas City on Sunday (Nov. 2) afternoon.

The teams entered overtime tied at 1-1 before the Lady Hawks advanced through on penalties. Quincy now has a chance to play in its fourth straight GLVC Tournament championship game with a win on Friday (Nov. 7).

The early minutes of the game were played in the midfield as neither team had a shot until the 22nd minute. It was on that shot that Rockhurst took a 1-0 lead as Jessica Cook scored from 18 yards off a couple passes by Taylor Skala and Courtney Silberberg.

Rockhurst (14-2-3) continued to press for a second goal in the first half, taking 10 shots, but eight of those came off goal as freshman goalkeeper Megan Swanson (St. Charles, Mo./St. Dominic) needed to make only one save.

The possession turned in the second half as Quincy (8-8-3) saw more of the ball and the teams finished even in shots, 6-6.

QU had a chance in the 66th minute as freshman defender Bailey Greubel (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) sent in a corner kick and then got in the mix, but her header was saved by Caitlin Winschel.

Winschel was called upon again in the 80th minute on a shot by junior midfielder Ashley Burton (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville).

Quincy continued to apply pressure for an equalizer and the Lady Hawks finally scored in unusual fashion at the 81:26 mark. QU won a corner kick and sophomore defender Maddy Kuhlenberg (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word Academy) sent in a high-arcing ball that crept inside the far post directly off the corner kick. It was the first goal of her career.

Quincy fended off a corner kick and three shots by Rockhurst in the final four minutes to send the game into overtime.

Senior forward Kayla Nurnberger (Washington, Mo.) had a header saved in the 96th minute and Winschel also stopped a shot by senior defender Brittney Kuster (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's) in the 108th minute before going to penalty kicks.

The teams were even at 2-2 after two kicks with senior midfielder Taylor Wakeland (St. Louis, Mo./Rockwood Summit) and Burton converting on their tries. Redshirt-junior midfielder Natalie Kuhlenberg (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word Academy) converted on Quincy's third attempt before Kinsley Fitzpatrick rattled the post to give QU a 3-2 lead heading into the fourth round.

Junior midfielder Haylye Markway (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) gave Quincy a 4-2 lead, but Meghan Kilkenny matched it. Nurnberger then stepped up to clinch the game and she sent the Lady Hawks through with a perfect kick.

Rockhurst out-shot Quincy, 19-9, in the game, but Quincy had the edge in shots on goal, 6-3. Rockhurst had a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The GLVC Tournament will now relocate to No. 1 seed UW-Parkside where the Lady Hawks will face off with No. 7 seed Missouri S&T, which defeated Bellarmine, 2-0, on Sunday in Louisville, Ky. Kickoff times for Friday (Nov. 7) will be announced later. UWP will take on Drury in the opposite semifinal.
