Lady Hawks Fall in Penalty Kicks in GLVC Semifinal

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's soccer season came to end on Friday (Nov. 7) afternoon as the Lady Hawks put up a valiant defensive effort, but fell to No. 7 seed Missouri S&T in penalty kicks, 4-3, in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament semifinals in Kenosha, Wis.

The game ended in a scoreless draw after 110 minutes as the Lady Hawks went to penalties for the second straight game, but they could not recapture the magic they found in defeating Rockhurst last Sunday (Nov. 2).

The teams played much of the first half in the midfield, taking just three combined shots in the first 45 minutes with neither team getting a strong chance on goal.

In the second half, the Lady Hawks (8-8-4) progressively gained more of the ball and threatened several times.

No. 6 seed Quincy had a couple tries in the 67th and 68th minutes, but junior midfielder Haylye Markway (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) had both of her shots turned away by Kaitlyn Deister. Markway had another shot on target in the 77th minute off a corner kick, but Deister made another stop to keep the game scoreless.

In the 81st minute, the Lady Hawks sent in a cross for junior midfielder Ashley Burton (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville), but the All-GLVC first team standout had her shot turned away. QU had a corner kick and three more shots in the final three minutes of regulation, but could not find the winner.

Freshman goalkeeper Megan Swanson (St. Charles, Mo./St. Dominic) needed to make just two saves in the game to preserve her 11th clean sheet. She stopped the Miners' best effort in the 54th minute, making a kick save on a shot by Sabrina Hostler.

On another corner in the 99th minute, sophomore forward Caroline Basler (Pevely, Mo./St. Pius X) fired a shot on target, but a Missouri S&T defender cleared it away. Quincy had two additional corner kicks in the second overtime, but the game remained scoreless and went to penalties.

Quincy went up 1-0 through one round after senior midfielder Taylor Wakeland (St. Louis, Mo./Rockwood Summit) converted on her try and freshman goalkeeper Megan Swanson (St. Charles, Mo./St. Dominic) turned away an effort by Sammy Minea.

Burton's shot in the second round hit the post, denying the chance to go up 2-0 and the Miners converted to tie it at 1-1 through two kicks. Redshirt-junior midfielder Natalie Kuhlenberg (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word Academy) and senior forward Kayla Nurnberger (Washington, Mo.) made their next two kicks and the teams were tied 3-3 through four rounds.

In the fifth round, Markway's shot was saved and Alex McCord's shot for the Miners scraped the underside of the crossbar and fell behind the goal line to send Missouri S&T (9-9-1) through to its first-ever GLVC title game.

The Lady Hawks held a 14-4 edge in shots and an 8-6 advantage in corner kicks.

This is the first time in head coach Dave Musso's nine-year tenure the Lady Hawks will be left out of the NCAA Tournament field. They were one of just three schools (Grand Valley State, St. Rose) in the nation with an eight-year run of NCAA postseason appearances.

The Miners will play the winner of No. 1 seed UW-Parkside and No. 4 seed Truman State for the GLVC Championship on Sunday (Nov. 9).
