Box Score MARION, Ill. - After three straight extra-inning victories to reach the championship game of the GLVC conference tournament, the Hawks were faced with the Saints of Maryville standing in the way of back-to-back conference crowns.
MU put crooked numbers on the board in the second and fifth innings that proved to be the difference as the Saints dealt Quincy an 11-1Â loss in the conference title game to conclude the Hawks epic run through the tournament.Â
After a scoreless first inning,
Austin Simpson got the Hawks on the board in the second frame, blasting a lead off homer over the center field wall to put his side ahead.Â
Maryville answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 3-1 lead into the third.Â
QU was able to reach base only once in the middle innings as the Saints broke through once again in the fifth on a single hit due to a mixture of walks and wild pitches to take a 7-1 lead. Shortly after, the Saints added a run in the sixth and three in the seventh to press the advantage further.Â
Neither side entered the scoring column in the final two innings as Maryville went on to take the championship 11-1 to deal Quincy its only loss of the tournament and a runner-up finish.Â
