Hawks Win Wild Game To Return to GLVC Championship

OZARK, Mo. – The Quincy University baseball team battled through four lead changes, but finally prevailed in a back-and-forth affair, 9-5, over Saint Joseph's in the GLVC Tournament on Saturday (May 13) at U.S. Baseball Park.

The Hawks (31-20) will play a winner-take-all GLVC championship game against Drury at 12:30 p.m. Sunday (May 14). The game will air live and free on the GLVC Sports Network.

The Hawks opened the scoring with two outs in the top of the first. Senior Dominic Miles (Quincy, Ill.) led off the game with a single and moved to third on a fly out and a groundout. Junior Troy Wehde (St. Charles, Mo.) then drew a walk and sophomore Nolan Snyder (St. Louis, Mo.) and senior Jack Klages (St. Louis, Mo.) drove the runners in with RBI singles. The Hawks wound up leaving the bases loaded in the inning.

The Pumas tied the game in the second with a pair of unearned runs off QU freshman starter Riley Martin (Salem, Ill.) as junior Brynn Martinez (Southwest Ranches, Fla.) committed a throwing error allowing both runs to score.

The back-and-forth of the game had only just started. The Pumas posted a run in the fourth on Jeff Hightower's RBI single.

Quincy regained the lead in the fifth as junior J.C. DeMuri (Manchester, Mo.) delivered an RBI single that plated senior Jake Walters (St. Louis, Mo.), who led off with a double. Wehde followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position and Klages' RBI groundout pushed QU ahead 4-3.

With Martin approaching 100 laborious pitches, head coach Josh Rabe turned to the bullpen. Sophomore lefty Aaron Stone (Palmyra, Mo.) walked in a run before freshman William Sanchez (Miami, Fla.) did the same to his first batter to give SJC a 5-4 lead. Sanchez bounced back to retire the Nos. 3 and 4 hitters in the Pumas lineup to escape the bases loaded jam.

Quincy took the lead back in the sixth. Junior Matt Hilmes (Carlyle, Ill.) led off with a single, went to second on a sac bunt and to third when Miles reached on an error. Miles then stole second and a sac fly by Walters tied the game. DeMuri followed with a two-out RBI single to give the Hawks a 6-5 lead.

Sanchez and freshman Alex Pribyl (Anoka, Minn.) combined to retire the Pumas in the sixth and Pribyl pitched around a one-out walk in the seventh to keep the Hawks' lead.

Quincy finally got some breathing room in the eighth as Miles reached on a bunt single and Walters slammed his 18th homer of the season to give the Hawks an 8-5 lead. DeMuri would then single and eventually score an unearned run on a wild pitch to push the advantage to four runs.

Senior lefty Hunter Haynes (Mexico, Mo.) retired the Pumas in order in the eighth and ninth innings, continuing his dominance since moving to the bullpen in mid-April.

Sanchez (1-0) was credited with the win while Chad O'Bryan (1-1) was charged with the loss in relief. Martin took the no-decision, giving up three runs (one earned) on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts in four innings.

DeMuri led the Hawks by going 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. Miles and Walters each had two hits with Miles scoring three times and Walters driving in three.

Quincy and Drury matched up April 14-15 at QU Stadium with the Hawks taking three of four games from the Panthers.
