Lewis Upsets Hawks In Final Seconds at GLVC Tournament

QUINCY, Ill. – Lewis's Miles Simelton hit a go-ahead jumper with 6.3 seconds left and the Quincy University men's basketball team was not able to get off the final shot in a 79-78 defeat on Thursday (March 2) night in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament quarterfinals at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind.

The loss eliminated the Hawks from the conference tournament as they turn their focus to the release of the NCAA Tournament field, which will be announced Sunday (March 5) at 9:30 p.m. on NCAA.com. QU was ranked No. 4 in the latest rankings with the top eight advancing to the tournament.

On Thursday night, the No. 2-seed Hawks (24-6) and No. 7-seed Flyers (18-12) played a tight game throughout as the teams exchanged the lead 13 times and had 10 tie scores.

Lewis opened up its largest lead of the game, 68-59, with 9:49 to play on a jumper by Adam Pischke. The Hawks quickly whittled the deficit down, using a 15-4 run over the next four minutes to take a 74-72 lead after four straight points from senior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Waunakee, Wis./Kirkwood CC).

Delaney Blaylock, who led the Flyers with 26 points and 11 rebounds, quickly scored on the other end to tie the game, which remained deadlocked until Capel Henshaw hit a 3-pointer with 3:22 remaining.

Both teams went 0-for-2 with a turnover on their next three possessions until Tagarelli converted on a layup to cut the deficit to 77-76 with 41 seconds left.

Tagarelli then got a block on the defensive end, and without using a timeout, the Hawks got the ball to senior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West), who pushed in a jumper with 14.5 seconds left to give QU a 78-77 lead.

After a Lewis timeout, Simelton worked to get space on the right wing and hit a 17-footer with 6.3 seconds left to regain the lead for the Flyers.

Senior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) quickly pushed the ball without calling a timeout and got all the way to the rim, but had his shot blocked out-of-bounds by Blaylock. With 1.3 seconds left, the Hawks inbounded the ball to Tagarelli, but he spun directly into a Lewis defender and could not get up the final shot.

In the first half, the Hawks gained some separation from the Flyers by shooting 50 percent (18-for-36) from the field and holding them to a 44 percent (14-for-32) mark. Quincy held a 47-39 lead at the intermission. Blaylock was the key to keeping the game close as the Flyers' sophomore wing scored 18 points in the first 20 minutes.

Early in the second half, the Flyers grinded the game to a halt, switching to a zone defense that the Hawks took some time adjusting to. Lewis tied the game at 57-57 with 15:39 left and led by as many as nine before the Hawks climbed back in by moving the ball the post.

The Hawks shot just 39 percent (12-for-31) from the field in the second half and gave up 58 percent (18-for-31) to the Flyers after halftime.

McGaughey led the Hawks with 22 points, 10 rebounds and three steals. Senior guard Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) tallied 21 points and hit five 3-pointers. Tagarelli finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Senor had nine points and six assists and did not commit a turnover in 36 minutes.

Quincy committed just seven turnovers in the game while forcing Lewis into 13 miscues. The Flyers had a slight edge on the glass, 36-35.

The Hawks now await the NCAA Tournament field announcement on Sunday (March 5) at 9:30 p.m. The selection show will air live on NCAA.com. The first game of the Midwest Regional will be Saturday, March 11 at the site of the top seed in the region, which is currently Bellarmine.
