Nine Run Seventh Boosts Hawks Over Top Seeded USI

WESTFIELD, Ind. - The No. 18 Quincy University baseball team turned to fifth year senior starter Brandon Ley in a Great Lakes Valley Conference elimination game against the University of Southern Indiana with Midwest Regional implications on the line. Ley came through with a superb outing to pick up his seventh win of the season. QU exploded in the seventh inning to the tune of nine runs to put the game out of reach for a 12-4 win.

Brandon Ley (W, 7-1) gave the Hawks (36-15) a signature outing to stave off elimination in their second game of the GLVC Championship Tournament. Ley went seven innings scattering six hits and allowing one walk. USI (33-19) scored two earned runs against the right hander. Ley struck out five Screaming Eagles.

With Chris Ward on second and Brynn Martinez on first base, David Jacob hit a hard grounder in the hole at second base. Sam Griggs made a diving stop, but his throw was off the mark allowing Chris Ward to wheel around and score the first run of the game in the third inning.

Ryan Snyder walked in the fourth inning and came all the way around to score on a Justin Blechle double to left center to give the Hawks a two run lead. Later in the inning, Martinez hit a sacrifice fly to score Blechle.

USI got a run back with a lead off home run from Drake McNamara in the fifth. The Hawks traded a double play for a USI run in the sixth inning cutting their lead to 3-2.

The Hawks went through five Screaming Eagles pitchers in a nine run seventh inning to bust the game open. Chris Ward led off with a double to left center. Martinez singled up the middle to score Ward.

After the first pitching change, Dominic Miles was hit by a pitch on a 1-2 count. David Jacob doubled to right center to score Martinez and bring Miles to third.

Following the second pitching change, Jake Walters was intentionally walked to load the bases. With one out, Justin Blechle walked to score Miles. Matt Hilmes singled through the right side to score two runs and put runners at the corners. Troy Wehde walked to load up the bases again.

After the third pitching change, Ward reached on a fielder's choice at third to score a run. Brynn Martinez followed with a three run no doubt home run to right center to boost the run total to nine runs in the seventh.

Two singles followed the fourth pitching change, but the Hawks would leave the runners stranded to end the inning.

Trent Gunn hit a two run homer for the Screaming Eagles in the bottom of the ninth, but it was too little too late for the second ranked team in the Midwest Region.

The Hawks advance to the third day of the GLVC Tournament to a rematch with Bellarmine University in another elimination game tomorrow (May 14). Bellarmine won the first game against Quincy, 6-4, with four runs coming in the ninth inning on day one. First pitch for the rematch is scheduled for 11 a.m. CDT at Grand Park in Westfield, Ind.
