Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Brendan Bittner

Hawks' Season Ends in GLVC Semifinal to #14 UWP, 93-86

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The Quincy University men's basketball team saw its season come to a close on Saturday (March 5) night in a 93-86 loss to No. 14 UW-Parkside in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament semifinal at Family Arena.

The Hawks ended their season with a 20-10 record – the first time since the 2009-10 season they hit the 20-win mark. This was the first conference semifinal appearance for the Hawks since 2008.

Quincy led for a majority of the game, but a 12-0 run by the Rangers (24-4) midway through the second half gave them a 65-57 lead they would not relinquish. QU cut it to as few as four points on two occasions, but the Rangers scored on each ensuing possession.

The Hawks led, 39-37, at halftime after junior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Bayside, Wis./Waunakee/Kirkwood CC) hit a short hook as time expired in the first half.

Early in the second half, the Hawks used an 11-2 run to take a 10-point lead, 51-41, after another  basket by Tagarelli.

UW-Parkside's Jake Verhagen came back and knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to cut it down to four points. Senior guard Nate Des Jardins (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) steadied the ship with a layup and junior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) hit two free throws to push the lead back to six.

The Hawks battled foul trouble for most of the night and that hampered their ability to defend in the second half as the Rangers went on their run. Tagarelli and McGaughey were each hamstrung with four fouls about midway through the second half.

Junior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) led five Hawks in double figures with 20 points to go with five assists and two steals. Tagarelli chipped in his sixth double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Senior wing Godson Eneogwe (Chicago, Ill./Maine West/Illinois Central) tacked on 14 points. McGaughey had 13 points and junior guard Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) added 10.

The Hawks shot 46.3 percent (31-for-67) from the field while the Rangers hit 53.4 percent (31-for-58) of their shots. QU limited GLVC Player of the Year Andy Mazurczak to 12 points and eight assists. Kendale McCullum led the Rangers with 17 points.
