Late Rally Lifts Hawks In GLVC Tournament Win

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team claimed an 87-80 win over McKendree in a wild GLVC Tournament first round game at Pepsi Arena on Sunday (Feb. 28) afternoon.

The Hawks (19-9) led by as many as 16 points in the first half and trailed by as much as 10 in the second half, but closed the game on a 28-11 run over the final eight minutes to secure their place in Friday's GLVC Tournament quarterfinal in St. Charles, Mo.

The No. 7-seed Hawks will take on No. 2-seed Drury at Family Arena. Game time is yet to be announced.

Sunday's win was the first postseason win for the men's basketball program since the 2010 season when the Hawks last advanced to the GLVC Tournament quarterfinals. QU went to the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen that season.

McKendree (13-14) led the Hawks, 60-59, after a 3-pointer by senior guard Jordan Wilson (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) with 12:12 remaining. From there, the Hawks struggled mightily on the offensive end, missing their next nine shots as the Bearcats built their lead to 10 points, 69-59, with eight minutes left.

Following a media timeout, junior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) kick-started the QU offense. He got to the basket freely for a layup after a defensive stop before picking up two straight three-point plays on drives to the lane.

Senor had a rough first half with just two points (1-for-4), one assist and three turnovers. In the last eight minutes alone, Senor had 17 points, going 6-for-8 from the floor, including 3-for-4 from 3-point range.

A bucket by junior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) off a Senor dish cut McKendree's lead to 72-69.

Senor then buried an open 3-pointer from a post pass by junior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Bayside, Wis./Waunakee/Kirkwood CC) that cut the deficit to 74-72. Senor's triple with 3:33 left tied the game at 76-76.

Senior wing Godson Eneogwe (Chicago, Ill./Maine West/Illinois Central) answered a McKendree basket by knocking down a 17-foot baseline jumper after retrieving an offensive board.

The teams then traded misses before Tagarelli's spin move and layin gave QU its first lead since early in the second half, 80-78, with 1:36 to play. McGaughey then came away with a loose ball and senior guard Nate Des Jardins (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) converted in traffic on the other end to push the Hawks' lead to 82-78.

Nate Michael then sank a couple free throws for the Bearcats before Tagarelli boxed out 6-foot-8 David Newton for a tough offensive rebound off a missed 3-pointer.

After a quick timeout, the Hawks worked the inside-out game and Tagarelli again kicked out to Senor, who buried a 3-pointer from the right wing to give QU an 85-80 lead with 12.3 seconds left.

Michael missed a 3-pointer before senior guard Von Washington III/Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) sank a couple free throws to seal the win.

The teams were tied, 9-9, in the early minutes of the first half before Quincy exploded on a 21-5 run to take a 30-14 lead with 7:40 left in the first half after Wilson's mid-range jumper.

The Bearcats, though, closed the half strong and QU led by just five, 42-37, going into halftime.

Senor led the Hawks with 19 of his 21 points coming in the second half. He dished out five assists and collected four rebounds.

Eneogwe finished with 17 points and nine rebounds. Tagarelli had 12 points, seven boards, four assists and two blocks. Wilson added 10 points off the bench.

The Hawks shot just 39 percent (32-for-82) from the floor, but attempted 20 more shots than McKendree, which shot 46.8 percent (29-for-62) from the field. QU forced 19 turnovers and turned them into 17 points. The Hawks committed just seven turnovers.

David Franklin led the way for the Bearcats with 27 points and 11 rebounds. He was 11-for-19 from the field. John Murphy chipped in a career-high 19 points off the bench.

Quincy and Drury will square off Friday (March 4) in the GLVC Tournament quarterfinal at Family Arena in St. Charles, Mo. The Panthers defeated the Hawks, 79-76, in Springfield, Mo. on Jan. 28.
