Hawks' Season Ends in GLVC Tournament Quarterfinal

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's volleyball team had its season come to an end on Friday (Nov. 18) afternoon as the Hawks fell to #15 Lewis, 25-17, 28-26, 25-18, in the GLVC Tournament quarterfinals at the Eastside Centre in East Peoria, Ill.

The Hawks (16-15) came in as the fourth seed from the West Division and matched up with the East Division's top seed. It was Quincy's first conference tournament appearance since 2011.

After dropping the first set, the Hawks bounced back in the second frame. They took a 9-5 lead after a kill by junior Bekah Raebel (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) and a solo block from senior Emily Lindemulder (Homer Glen, Ill./Chicago Christian).

The Flyers (25-6) then went on a 9-2 run to take a 14-11 lead in the second set, but the Hawks took a 19-18 lead on another Raebel kill, one of eight she would have in Set 2.

The teams then traded points until the Hawks had set point at 24-23. The Flyers answered with two straight to take a 25-24 lead, but Raebel came up with back-to-back kills to give QU a 26-25 lead. The Flyers, though, scored the next three to take the set.

The Hawks led as late as 15-14 in the third set after Lindemulder's kill, but the Flyers went on a 3-0 run and never gave up the lead after that.

Raebel led the Hawks with 12 kills (.243), while Lindemulder added seven to go with six blocks. Sophomore Stephanie Mizeur (Riverton, Ill.) chipped in five kills (.556) with no errors.

Junior libero Rachel Shores (Huntley, Ill.) led the back row with 16 digs while sophomore Taylor McMonagle (Green Bay, Wis./Denmark) added 11. Junior Miranda Rodriguez (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) dished out 18 assists.

The Flyers out-hit the Hawks, .282 to .133, and had a 9-7 lead in blocks.

The Hawks won 16 games this season, their highest total since a 19-14 record in 2007. They have improved on their win total in each of head coach Bob Crank's four seasons, winning nine, 11, 13 and 16 matches, respectively.
