Plesha, Hawks Advance In GLVC Tourney With Win at Drury

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's soccer team got two goals from sophomore forward Eddie Plesha (Normal, Ill./Normal Community) and junior goalkeeper Nate Griffin (St. Louis, Mo./CBC) kept a clean sheet as the Hawks blanked host Drury, 2-0, on Sunday (Hawktober 30) in the GLVC Tournament quarterfinals in Springfield, Mo.

The Hawks (12-4-2), who are the No. 5 seed in the tournament and ranked No. 7 in the latest NCAA Midwest Regional rankings, have won seven straight games and will play the GLVC's top seed Rockhurst on Friday in the semifinals in Indianapolis. Rockhurst is ranked No. 6 in the nation and defeated Quincy 1-0 in Kansas City on Sept. 30.

On Sunday, the No. 4-seeded Panthers (11-4-3) outshot the Hawks by a 10-6 count, including a 3-2 edge in shots on goal. But Plesha made his two opportunities count.

In the 22nd minute, senior forward Pete Condol (Mount Carmel, Ill.) had his shot blocked by a DU defender, but the ricochet fell to Plesha. The sophomore touched around a couple defenders before firing the go-ahead goal into the top of the goal. Condol earned his third assist of the year.

The Hawks took their 1-0 lead into halftime and Plesha added an insurance goal in the 69th minute with some nifty footwork. He received a pass from senior midfielder Scott Ladi (Florissant, Mo./De Smet), then pushed the ball from 25 yards out, dribbled through the entire Drury defense in the penalty area, touched around the goalie, and scored on a tap-in. Plesha now has eight goals on the year and Ladi picked up his third assist.

Griffin kept the Panthers out of the net for his fourth clean sheet of the season. Quincy has allowed just four goals during its seven-game winning streak.

The Hawks can continue to build their resume for a possible NCAA Tournament bid on Friday with a win over Rockhurst. Kickoff time at Carroll Stadium in Indianapolis is yet to be announced.
