Lady Hawks Blank Lewis, 4-0, in GLVC Tournament Opener

QUINCY, Ill. – The 14th-ranked Quincy University women's soccer team dominated play from the start on Sunday (Nov. 1) afternoon and soundly defeated Lewis, 4-0, in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament quarterfinal at Legends Stadium.

The No. 3-seed Lady Hawks (13-3-3) advance to play No. 2-seed Truman State on Friday (Nov. 6) in Louisville, Ky. The tournament's top seed Bellarmine will play host to the championships after surviving McKendree in overtime on Sunday.

The Lady Hawks are playing in the conference tournament semifinal for the seventh consecutive season. Truman has the next longest streak with three.

Quincy was in charge from the outset against the Flyers (10-7-2), not allowing a shot on goal until the 86th minute.

The Lady Hawks opened the scoring in the 37th minute when junior Maddy Kuhlenberg (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word) sent in a cross and freshman Abby Pulliam (St. Louis, Mo./Eureka) ran onto it and scored in front of goal.

Just 55 seconds later, Quincy had a 2-0 lead as sophomore Bailey Greubel (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) lifted a long ball for sophomore Mackenzie Rief (Wentzville, Mo./St. Dominic), who got on the end of it and cleanly beat the keeper. It was Rief's fourth goal of the season and her third in the last four games as she is playing top form as the postseason begins.

The Lady Hawks, who out-shot the Flyers, 5-4, in the first half, continued their attack after halftime. Senior Taylor Lindwedel (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) put a ball into space for Pulliam. The rookie beat the defender to it on the left wing, hit her shot of the keeper's hands and off the underside of the crossbar for her second goal of the game and her 11th of the season. Lindwedel is tied with Kuhlenberg and senior Ashley Burton (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) for the team lead with five assists.

From there, the second unit took over and kept the Flyers off the board. Just 14 seconds before the final whistle, junior Gabby Herrick (St. Louis, Mo./Eureka) scored off a cross by sophomore Halee Nurnberger (Washington, Mo.). Herrick now has three goals and Nurnberger recorded her first assist.

The defense was outstanding on Sunday, not allowing the Flyers to connect on passes in the final third and allowing just one shot on goal. QU out-shot Lewis, 15-7, overall and had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks. Quincy now has five shutouts in its last six games. Sophomore keeper Megan Swanson (St. Charles, Mo./St. Dominic) recorded her eighth shutout of the season.

The focus now turns to Truman, which defeated Quincy, 2-0, last Wednesday (Oct. 28) in the regular season finale in Kirksville, Mo. The Bulldogs defeated Rockhurst, 2-1, on Sunday in their quarterfinal. Missouri-St. Louis will join Quincy, Bellarmine and Truman as the fourth team in the tournament semifinals. Game times have yet to be announced.
